Microwave utensils are those that manufacturers use a designation to label a variety of kitchen cookware to indicate that the cookware can be securely placed in a microwave as food is heated or cooked. Cookware such as cutlery, plates, pots, dishes, cups, and other items must be warmed in a microwave oven without warming past room temperature to fall under this group. Use caution when a piece of cookware is heated in the microwave gets hot since it might not be wholly microwave-safe and could explode if it reaches certain temperatures.
How to use microwave utensils?
- Put the microwave utensil and 1 cup (250 ml) of cold water in a microwave-safe dish.
- Cook on maximum power for 1 minute.
- Carefully feel the utensil. If the empty spoon is warm, do not use it for microwave cooking. Caution: Do not exceed the 1-minute cooking time.
Materials that can be used in the microwave oven
Aluminum foil: They are merely shields. To prevent overcooking, thin pieces of meat or poultry can be covered with small, smooth pieces. Arcing may happen if the foil is too close to the oven walls. The foil should be at least 2,5cm away from the oven walls.
Dinnerware: Microwave-safe only. Do not use cracked or chipped dishes.
Glass jars: Permanently remove the lid. Use it only to heat food until it is just about warm. Most glass jars are not heat-resistant and may break.
Glassware: Heat-resistant oven glassware only. Make sure there are no metallic elements or parts. Do not use cracked or chipped dishes.
Oven cooking bags: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Could you not close it with the metal tie? Make slits to allow steam to escape.
.Plastic: Microwave-safe only. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. It should be labeled “microwave safe.” Some plastic storage containers soften as the food inside gets hot.
Plastic wrap: Microwave-safe only. Utilize it to cover food as it cooks to keep moisture in. Never let plastic wrap touch food. Thermometers: microwave-safe only
Materials to avoid using in a microwave
- Aluminum tray: Could lead to arcing. Put the food in a dish that can go in the microwave.
- Food carton with metal handle: This could lead to arcing. The food should be placed in a microwave-safe container.
- Metal or metal-trimmed utensils: Food is protected from microwave energy by metal. Metal trim could lead to arcing.
- Metal twist ties: Could lead to arcing and a fire in the oven.
- Paper bags: May reason a fire in the range.
- Plastic foam: In hot temperatures, plastic foam might melt or pollute the liquid.
- Wood: When used in a microwave, wood will dry up and may split or crack.
Microwave – dish and utensil guidelines
Be careful when selecting microwave utensils. Microwaves are reflected by metal but can pass through the glass, paper, plastics, and most ceramics to reach the meal.
Microwave Utensil guidelines:
- Testing for safety in a microwave oven should be done on recently purchased cutlery or plates.
- Glass utensils that can withstand the range are advised, although they should be inspected before use. Food items can be warmed on paper plates.
- Recycled containers should be watched when cooking because they might contain foreign components.
- China, ceramics, pottery, and heat-resistant plastics marked “microwave-safe” can be used. Ordinary dinner plates and cookware should not have metal in their composition or decoration. Dishes with gold, silver, or platinum bands will reflect microwave energy and could cause arcing.
- The use of metal cookware in a microwave is not advised. Metal will prevent microwaves from penetrating and cooking the food properly.
- Metal and foil can be utilized without risk when using a microwave convection oven for cooking.
- Boilable plastic pouches should be split and placed on the oven floor or inside a serving dish.
- Suppose specialty utensils such as popcorn poppers, micro-fryers, micro-pressure cookers, etcetera, are used in a microwave. In that case, you should follow the manufacturers’ directions for using the product carefully.
- Be careful when using Styrofoam containers. These will melt with the heat from butter, oils, etcetera. It is better not to use Styrofoam at all.
