garment steamer

What is the purpose of a garment steamer?

A garment steamer also called a cloth steamer or simply a steamer is a device used fast remove wrinkles from garments and fabrics with high-temperature steam.

How to use a garment steamer?

The best method for removing creases from clothing is to use a garment steamer. Water is heated in steamers till it turns into steam. This moisture is delivered to garments to relax the fibers and eliminate wrinkles. Clothing steamers are a quick and simple way to remove creases from various materials, even though they are not as broadly used as traditional irons. You’ll be steaming your clothing in no time after deciding which type of steamer is ideal for you and learning a few steaming tips.

Knowing when to use a garment steamer

Step 1.  Steamers work wonderfully for most materials, as steaming is a delicate method of de-wrinkling. Fabrics that can be burned include most pieces of cotton, silks, wool, and polyesters. However, some fabrics should not be vapored. These fabrics encircle waxed jackets, suede, or materials that may melt, such as plastic. If unsure if your fabric can be steamed, carefully test the steamer on a small corner of the material before using it on the entire garment. Always check fabric care labels for advice before steaming.

Step 2. Be careful when steaming delicate fabrics. Treat silk, chiffon, sheer, or velvet fabrics with care. Keep a few inches of distance between the steamer and the material, and do not steam in one place of fabric for too long. To avoid damaging embellishments or prints, burn the garment inside out to eliminate the wrinkles.

Step 3. To de-wrinkle, a more comprehensive selection of clothing, use a steamer rather than an iron. Both irons and steamers offer advantages, but their primary purpose is to remove wrinkles from clothing. Irons are great for pressing creases into clothing and work best on less delicate textiles (like cotton or denim). Because they are less prone to harm fabrics, steamers can be used on a broader range of materials. Steamers do not work well if you want to press or crease your clothing because they are commonly used on fabric when hanging. People who travel frequently should use steamers because they are more portable than irons.

Steaming your clothes

Step 1. Get the garment steamer ready for use. Fill your textile steamer’s water tank with cold water. If you do not want water to leak all over the place, ensure all steamer parts are correctly fastened. Connect the steamer. Typically, steamers heat up very quickly (2-3 minutes).

As soon as steam starts to build, let your steamer continue to heat. To achieve the most significant results, fully warm up your steamer. Confirm it is steaming nicely before you use it. You can check how well it is cooking by pulling the trigger on the handle / pressing the button and seeing how many steam issues when you release it. This is the same button you will use while steaming your clothes.

Step 2. Hang the garment you wish to steam. It’s easiest to burn a garment when it is hanging. Upright steamers typically have a hanging pole attached. If you are using a handheld steamer, hang your clothing from a shower rod, a chair back, a door knob, or anything similar.

Step 3. Steam your clothing by moving the steamer along with the fabric in downward strokes. The steam will gently eliminate the creases on its own; you don’t need to press the material against anything or press it against anything complicated. Press the steam button many times as you move the steamer down your outfit to spray the fabric. Even though it is not required, you can steam your garments on a handheld pad. When steaming excessively thick or wrinkled fabrics, it could be helpful too.

  • If you use a pad, put it on with one hand while holding the steamer with the other. You should steam from the inside or underneath the garment if it is very wrinkled.
  • The fabric’s weight against the steam will hasten the removal of the creases. When steaming textiles with decorations like pleats, ruffles, etc., hold the steamer between one and two inches away from the fabric. As a result, the cloth will be able to maintain its shape while being de-wrinkled by steam.
  • Turning the garment inside out will allow you to steam the fabric without harming the decorations if it has severe wrinkles.

Step 4. Let your clothing air dry. Your clothing will feel damp after a recent steaming. There might be a few little water stains. This is natural, and your garment will dry, so don’t be frightened. After steaming the item, allow it to sit for 5–10 minutes before putting it on or hanging it in your wardrobe. The clothing will have plenty of time to dry as a result.

Choosing a garment steamer

  1. Determine how you plan to use your steamer most often. Some steamers are more portable than others, while others take up more space. Other steamers stand vertically while others are handled.
  2. Use an upright steamer. Because their bases rest on the floor, good steamers are occasionally called floor steamers. Typically, these steamers have a base with a water tank, a line connected to a nozzle, and a pole with a clothes hook. To make them easier to move, these steamers often sit on wheels.
  • Upright steamers are the best option if you intend to keep your steamer in one place. Despite being more significant than other steamers, they are pretty helpful due to their qualities (the clothing hanger, nozzle), etc.
  • They can be moved if you don’t mind moving something a little bigger. These steamers are perfect if you need to steam a lot of clothing. They have a vast water base; thus, refilling is not necessary. Most upright steamers come with add-ons, such as various brushes for various materials.
  • Usually, upright steamers are the most expensive steamers, costing between Rs. 5000 and 6000.
  1.  If you are searching for something more bearable, use a handheld steamer.

These steamers are far more compact than upright models and are simple to bring in luggage or keep in a vehicle. A handheld steamer will be the best option if you require a steamer when traveling.

  • Handheld steamers combine the water tank and nozzle into one device. They typically weigh a couple of pounds.
  • Some handheld steamers come with attachments, like different nozzles and lint rollers.
  • Some steamers come with a small padded square with a strap that slips over your hand (similar to a large oven mitt). This pad can be helpful when you are steaming your clothing, as it can prevent you from burning your hands.
  • Handheld steamers typically range in price from Rs.3000-4000
