A fingerprint scanner is a technology that recognizes and authenticates a person’s fingerprints to authorize or refuse access to a physical space or computer system. It is a sort of biometric security system that uses both hardware and software methods to recognize a person’s fingerprint scans.

How does a fingerprint scanner work?

However, more advanced techniques must be utilized when using fingerprints to restrict access to buildings and computer systems: a computer must quickly scan the surface of your finger before converting the scanned image into a code it can compare against its database.

Two to three methods exist for scanning fingertips. An optical scanner takes a digital photo of your fingerprint by shining a bright light over it. You will understand how this works if you have ever made a photocopy of your hand. The image feeds into a computer scanner rather than creating a smudged black photocopy. A light-sensitive microchip, such as a CCD, charge-coupled device, or CMOS image sensor, is used by the scanner to create a digital image. Automatic image analysis by the computer identifies the fingerprint, which is converted into a code using advanced pattern-matching software.

A capacitive fingerprint scanner is a different kind of scanner that uses electricity to measure your finger. Your fingerprint’s ridges make contact with the surface when your finger rests on it, while the hollows between the cliffs stand slightly away. In other words, the distances between the various parts of your finger and the ground below vary. By sensing these gaps, a capacitive fingerprint scanner constructs a picture of your fingerprint. Scanners like this one resemble touchscreen devices like iPhones and iPads in several ways. Although capacitive scanners are quicker and more secure than optical ones, they can be damaged by static electricity and don’t function well when your fingertips are wet.

The third kind of fingerprint scanner is called an ultrasonic scanner because it “maps” your finger using high-frequency sound waves rather than light. You can use one of these to unlock the phone or secure access to your apps and data if you have a new Samsung smartphone. These are often built behind the display. Samsung claims that ultrasonic scanners perform better outside (in bright light or cold temperatures) than optical fingerprint scanners and are more secure (since they detect fingerprints in three dimensions). They are, however, typically slower than capacitive scanners.

The process of fingerprint scanning?

Unlike standard digital photos, scans have to capture precisely the right amount of detail, brightness, and contrast so that the fingerprint’s ridges and other information can be accurately matched to previous scans. They remember that fingerprints may be used as evidence in criminal proceedings, where a conviction carries the risk of a lengthy prison term or even the death penalty. That’s why “quality control” is integral to the fingerprint scanning process.

Here is how the procedure functions when using a basic optical fingerprint scanner:

  • Your finger is pressing down on a glass (or plastic) surface as a row of LEDs scans the area with intense light (sometimes called the platen).
  • The amount of pressure you apply, how clean or greasy your fingers are, how clean the scanning surface is, how bright the environment is, and other factors will affect the image’s quality.
  • Reflected light bounces back from your finger, through the glass, onto a CCD or CMOS image sensor.
  • The light reflected by your finger travels through the glass and lands on a CCD or CMOS image sensor.
  • The image created on the sensor gets brighter the longer this image-capture process goes on. Like in an indoor digital shot, if the flash is too close or too bright, parts of the fingerprint may be wholly washed away if the image is overly optimistic. The entire image will appear black if it is too dark, and details won’t be visible because of the opposite problem.
  • An algorithm determines whether the image is too light or too dark; if it is, the operator is alerted by an audible beep or LED indicator, and we repeat step 1 to try again.
  • Another technique involves checking the amount of detail if the image is appropriate; typically, this is done by counting the number of ridges and ensuring a variety of light and dark places. If the concept doesn’t pass this test, we start over at step 1 and try again.
  • The scanner alerts the operator that the concept is acceptable if the image satisfies these two checks (again, either by beeping or with a different LED indicator). The image is saved in flash memory as an acceptable scan, ready to be transferred to a “host” computer for additional processing (by USB connection, WiFi, Bluetooth, or a similar way). Images obtained in this technique are typically 512*512 pixels (the FBI’s preferred resolution), 2.5 cm (1 inch) square, 500 dots per inch, and 256 shades of grey.
  • To identify a match, the host computer can either automatically compare the image to one or more other fingerprints or temporarily or permanently store it in a database.

Advantages of the fingerprint scanner

Security: Security-wise, it is a considerable improvement over passwords and identity cards. Fingerprints are much harder to fake. The data is current for much longer than images and passwords since they change so little throughout a lifetime.

Ease of use: They are straightforward to use for the user. You are no longer struggling to remember your last password or being locked out due to leaving your photo ID at home. Your fingerprints are always with you.  

Non-transferable: Fingerprints cannot be transferred; swapping passwords or “clocking in” on behalf of another employee is impossible. This enhances protection against the theft of critical materials and enables more precise tracking of the workers.

Accountability: Additionally, using fingerprint recognition at work increases accountability. Biometric evidence that you were present when a scenario or occurrence occurred is difficult to dispute and can be used as proof if necessary.

Cost-effective: Technology managers have recently recognized the cost-effectiveness of fingerprint scanners as a security measure. Small, portable scanners provide a high degree of precision and are simple to set up.

Disadvantages of Fingerprint Scanner

System failures: The same technological issues and restrictions that affect other electronic identification systems, such as power outages, human error, and environmental conditions, also apply to scanners.

Cost: Even while fingerprint scanner systems are more affordable, smaller businesses may still find it challenging to deploy them due to the associated implementation and maintenance costs. As technologies become more inexpensive and cost-effective, this drawback gets smaller.

Exclusions: Even though fingerprints are primarily consistent throughout a person’s lifetime, some population segments will not be able to use the system. For instance, older individuals with a history of physical labor may find it challenging to enter worn prints into a system, or individuals who have lost fingers or hands would be disqualified.
