Know about “Kumbh Mela”
About the name
The name “Kumbh” comes from the immortal container of Nectar. The Demigods (Devtas) and Demons (Asuras) fought against each other over to achieve this Necter. The whole story described in historic Vedic scriptures which are known as the Puranas. With this, the tradition has mixed into the entire incident. Now the world knows this as The Kumbh Mela.
Nectar of immortality
The demigods and the demons jointly produced the nectar of immortality. The demigods made a deal with the demons to do it completely and share the nectar of immortality equally. Then the demigods and the demons put together on the banks of the milk ocean. Milk ocean situates in heaven.
After that, the churning of the milk ocean began. In this process, the Mandara Mountain used as the churning rod and Vasuki (the king of serpents)became the rope for churning. Deadly poison is the first product that produced after the churning of the milk ocean. Lord Shiva consumed the whole poison without being affected. When Lord Shiva consumed the poison, a couple of drops fell from his hands. Scorpions, snakes, and similar other deadly creatures consumed those drops. At the time of the churning, the Mandara Mountain started to submerge deep into the ocean. Seeing this Lord Vishnu transformed into a great tortoise and supported the mountain on His back. After overcoming many challenges Dhanwantari came out with the Kumbh of immortal nectar in his hands. The Demigods get afraid of demons bad intention. Then four Gods (Brahaspati, Surya, Shani, and Chandra) intentionally grabbed the pot to protect this Nectar from the demons.
Afterwards the Demons aware that God grabbed the pot intentionally then Demons realise the deal has not maintained. Then the Demons chased the demigods for 12 days and 12 nights. It is presumed that at the time of this chase, a couple of drops of Necture fell at four places from the Kumbh – Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nasik.
Where “Kumbh Mela” take place
These four places considered to have magical powers. It is considered that 12 days of Gods are equal to 12 years for humans. For this, the Kumbh Mela is observed once every 12 years in each of the four places. The four places are banks of river Godavari in Nasik, river Kshipra in Ujjain, river Ganges in Haridwar, and at the Sangam of Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati in Allahabad.
