What is air conditioning?
An air conditioning is a machine that is able to:
- Maintain a suitable humidity in all parts of a building.
- During certain seasons, free the air from excessive humidity.
- Provide a constant and adequate supply of ventilation.
- Remove from the air, any microorganisms, soot, dust and other pollutants.
- During warmer seasons, efficiently keep the indoor air cool.
- At least partially warm rooms in the winter.
- Give you comfort without being too expensive to buy or maintain.
How does air conditioning work?
Air conditioners work by transferring the heat from inside your room, outside. It then blows cool air back into your room. It cools the air by blowing it over a set of cool pipes, called an evaporator coil. It uses the same technology that keeps the inside of your fridge cool.
The coolant or refrigerant that runs through the evaporator coil, changes from a liquid to gas as it absorbs heat from the air. The liquid is then pumped through another coil to the outside of the building, where it cools and returns to its liquid form. This outside coil is the condenser as a result.
The compressor, that works like a pump, moves the coolant between the two coils, as well as changing the pressure of the coolant to ensure that it all evaporates and condenses in the appropriate coil.
The motor that runs the compressor consumes all the energy needed and the system offers three times the cooling energy that the compressor uses. The changing of the state of the coolant from liquid to gas, allows much more energy to be moved than the compressor uses.
“Ton”. But, what is it?
Ton refers to the amount of ice that would have melted in a day to keep a room cool, giving us the term ‘ton’ for measuring air conditioning.
