tampons

Tampons are cotton plugs, or something similar, to be put in a wound, orifice, or other openings to stop bleeding or soak up the blood.

What are tampons—and how are they used?

One way to manage menstrual flow during your period is by using tampons. Tampons can be used with or without an applicator inserted into the vagina. The FDA regulates tampons as medical devices, which may surprise you. Tampons approved by the FDA are designed to be used once before being discarded. Never use a tampon more than once.

What are tampons made out of?

Tampons with FDA approval are made of cotton, rayon, or a combination of the two. The FDA-approved tampons of today are created with absorbent fibers using a bleaching method free of elemental chlorine, preventing goods from containing harmful levels of dioxin.

Are reusable tampons safe?

Additional risks of infections like yeast, fungal, and bacterial infections may be present with reusable tampons. Reusable tampons may have come to your attention, but they still need to be cleared or approved by the FDA. The FDA advises against using reusable tampons. Only single-use tampons have been authorized or approved by the FDA.

How do I choose suitable tampons?

It is also available in various sizes to accommodate heavy and light blood flows. Before selecting the ideal tampon, you should experiment with a few different sizes.

Pros and Cons of Tampons

Pros: Tampons are an excellent option for women who swim or do other athletic activities. They are also less visible under clothing. Some women also prefer tampons because they are easier to carry, and you don’t feel them the same way you do pads.

Cons: The risk of toxic shock syndrome is higher with tampons. However, toxic shock syndrome caused by tampon use is uncommon.

Some tips to remember for the safe use of tampons include:

  • ‌Even if you have used tampons in the past, always adhere to the instructions on the label.
  • ‌Before and after using a tampon, wash your hands.
  • ‌Use tampons with the least amount of absorbency.
  • For instance, you might need to switch to a tampon with a lighter flow if you go for 6 hours without changing your tampon.
  • If you are using a tampon and exhibiting toxic shock syndrome symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Safety Tips

If tampons suit you, you might wish to discuss this with your doctor. Take these things into account:

Follow all labeled directions- If you have previously used tampons, read the package directions. Clean your hands before and after using a tampon. This will minimize the spread of bacteria.

Only use tampons when you have your period- Tampons should only be used during menstruation and for that purpose.

Change each tampon every 4 to 8 hours- Tampons should be worn for at most 8 hours.

Use the lowest absorbency tampon needed- The absorbency may be too high if you can wear one tampon for up to eight hours without changing it.

If you experience pain, speak with your healthcare professional; fever or other unusual symptoms- If you suffer discomfort, pain, or other unpleasant symptoms like unusual discharge when attempting to insert or wear a tampon, stop using tampons and contact your doctor.

Learn how to lower your risk by being aware of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) symptoms- Possible signs or symptoms of TSS include a rapid temperature (typically 102°F or higher), vomiting, diarrhoea, feeling faint or about to pass out when you stand up, disorientation, or a rash that resembles sunburn. Stop using tampons and get medical help immediately if you experience any of these symptoms during or after your menstruation. To lower your risk of TSS, use the least absorbent tampon possible, wear it for no more than 8 hours before throwing it away, and only use it when you have your period.
